Opening for boy-band Backstreet Boys at their Aug. 22 U.S. Cellular Coliseum concert is girl-band Girlicious.
Though Girlicious is young enough to have been screaming-tween Backstreet Boys fans back in the late ’90s, they’ve hewn closely to boy/girl band traditions.
Comprised of Tiffanie Anderson, Nichole Cordova, Natalie Mejia and Chrystina Sayers, the group is a sign-of-the-times affair, with direct ties to a reality TV series.
In this case, “Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,” aired for 10 episodes between February and April on The CW.
Like the Dolls, Girlicious was engineered by Robin Antin, the combo choreographer-clothing designer-music video director.
She assembled the team for the series around a year ago, and had them working on an album and music videos prior to the series’ premiere.
The album was due to be released this week, and was preceded by the iTunes release of the singles “Like Me” and “Stupid S***.” The former reached No. 1 on the iTunes chart.

[ Exclusive Download ] - Girlicious Album (TV commercial)
The first CD of Girlicious group was officially launched yesterday in Canada and had its premiere in the # 2 position! Bring here the photos from digital booklet of the album and also a video with the Canadian TV commercial of the CD being transmitted.
In the curious case of Girlicious, the four gals were battling long before they ever hit the stage. Such is the dilemma of winning a reality show with three other singers. All that catfighting doesn’t end overnight.
“It took about a month,” admits 20-year-old Natalie Mejia on a tour bus heading to Moncton, N. B., last week. The first month was the same as it was on the show. There was tension between us; there was still competition. “We didn’t know who was going to be the lead singer. We didn’t know what to expect.”
Through 10 episodes of the musical reality show The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious, Mejia competed against 11 other women who were handpicked from thousands of hopefuls.
All along, Girlicious was pegged to be a trio, but in the final episode judges went with four women — including two Mejia fought with bitterly, Tiffanie Anderson and Nichole Cordova (the other finalist, Chrystina Sayers, was one of her allies).
The show was over, but the scraps We had to put all that stuff aside and we had to talk,” she says. It was about a month into (making the) album that we decided it has to stop or we wouldn’t be successful. We wouldn’t be happy doing this.”
You have to have a little girl drama! But we’re together and we decided we’re a team. Everybody brings something amazing to this group.”
With the debut CD finally dropping Tuesday, the group hit the road in late July opening for the Backstreet Boys. But they had the spotlight to themselves for a show in Niagara Falls.
Mejia welcomes the naysayers. Winning the Pussycat Dolls show wasn’t a fluke — it was a gruelling audition stretched out for TV. We feel we have real music and we’re real artists. A lot of people are going to doubt it at the beginning because we do come from a reality show. What they don’t realize is a reality show is like a tool. Artists that have their own reality show have so much more publicity, you know.”
A lot of people feel like they know us from the show. They feel closer to us, they know our names, they know everything about us. I think it’s a great thing that we came from a reality show, and we have so much real music and real talent to back it up.”
Mejia was worried how Backstreet Boys fans would greet Girlicious but was thrilled after the first show.
All the stress and hard work that we put into getting into this world — that was hard itself. Then we had to go put the album together and get the dance moves together.”
It felt so great. You train and you train, and then you finally get to see your first fight, like a boxer. We did really, really well, and it was kind of like, ‘We graduated!”‘
The key now, she says, is to make Girlicious its own entity without distancing itself from proud parents The Pussycat Dolls.
We really look up to them as performers and as artists. We want our show to be as good as theirs.”
Not necessarily with the exact style or exact music, but just quality performers and quality show. That’s what we’re striving for.”
The Niagara Falls show came in between gigs in Montreal and Toronto. Sharp-eyed fans might catch the gals playing tourist.
Hopefully if we get a night off in Niagara, we’ll be running around. We’ll hit the town!”
